The Jeffrey S. Tanaka Grant for Asian American Studies is awarded to U of I graduate students who are conducting research related to Asian American Studies. This year, the department is pleased to announce our award-winners: Inyoung Jang and Anirban Mukhopadhyay. 

Inyoung Jang is a PhD candidate in the School of Information Sciences here at the University of Illinois. She is working on their dissertation project, which centers on the examination of how colonial and imperial legacies continue to shape urban landscapes and marginalize vulnerable populations. Her research project is entitled Semi-Basement Housing as Cold War Infrastructure: State Violence and the Legacies of American and Asian Imperialism and Colonialism in South Korea. 

Anirban Mukhopadhyay is a PhD candidate in Communications and Media at the College of Media, University of Illinois. He is working on his dissertation project, tentatively titled Governing the AIR: All India Radio as a Tool of Nationalism and Its Resonance in the Indian American Diaspora. He will be analyzing the relationship between state power and radio broadcasting in India and transnationally.
