The Department of Asian American Studies is honored to announce this year's recipients of the Jeffery S. Tanaka Research Grant. This research grant is named for Jeffrey S. Tanaka, a professor in the University of Illinois’ departments of Psychology and Educational Psychology until his untimely death in 1992. He was well known by his students for his generosity in mentoring graduate students.
Each of the award winners will receive $350 towards their research.
The recipients are:
Mark Sanchez, doctoral student in History and minoring in Asian American Studies. His research project is titled: Recognizing Marcos: Religion, Rights, and Representation in U.S. Based Opposition to Ferdinand Marcos in the Philippines, 1965-1986.
Ga Young Chung, a doctoral student in Education Policy, Organization and Leadership. Her research project is titled: Activism of Resignation: Challenges of Undocumented Korean American Youth Activists and their Compromise.
Mike Atienza, a doctoral student in Anthropology. His research examines how communities of queer Filipino migrants who have close ties to their homeland negotiate gender, race, and citizenship through mobile phone communication.
