My doctoral dissertation looks at South Korea’s urban middle-class families’ consumption of private postpartum care services, a fascinating amalgamation of traditional postpartum customs and cutting-edge health and beauty care methods for postpartum women. The ethnography traces how the newly introduced maternity care service product engages in the politics of middle-class femininity, motherhood, classism and the discourses of crisis of both social and cultural reproduction.
